Safari Etiquette in Sri Lanka: A Guide to Responsible Wildlife Tourism
The Golden Rules
Sri Lanka's national parks are protected ecosystems. As visitors, our presence inevitably impacts wildlife behavior. The goal of safari etiquette is to minimize this impact while maximizing the quality of the experience. The golden rule: we are guests in their home. Every vehicle movement, every sound, every flash of a camera should be filtered through this lens.
Vehicle Discipline
Never crowd a sighting. If a leopard is visible on a tree branch and another jeep is already viewing, maintain a distance of at least 20 meters. Do not block the animal's potential path of movement. Park drivers communicate with each other to ensure fair rotation at sightings. At Jungle Junction, we enforce strict vehicle protocols to ensure neither the wildlife nor other guests are compromised.
Noise and Behavior
Sudden noises stress wildlife. Speak in low tones during sightings. Turn off engine when stationary at viewing points. Do not stand up or lean out of the vehicle — sudden movements alarm animals and can trigger a flight response that ruins the sighting for everyone.
Ethical Photography
Never use flash photography. It disorients animals and can permanently damage nocturnal species' night vision. Do not request drivers to move closer than 15 meters to any wildlife. The best wildlife photographs come from patience, not intrusion.
