The Sri Lankan Sloth Bear: A Seasonal Tracking Guide
The Elusive Megafauna
The Sri Lankan Sloth Bear (Melursus ursinus inornatus) is arguably Wilpattu's most challenging megafauna to track. Characterized by an unkempt black coat, a cream-colored chest V, and a highly specialized anatomy for insectivory, these bears are primarily nocturnal and notoriously difficult to spot outside of specific micro-seasons.
The June Phenomenon: Palu Fruiting
In June, Wilpattu's ecosystem undergoes a remarkable transformation. The Palu (Manilkara hexandra) and Weera (Drypetes sepiaria) trees yield their fruit. This sudden abundance of accessible, high-sugar biomass forces typically reclusive, ant-and-termite-eating sloth bears to temporarily adopt frugivorous diets. They emerge from dense scrub into highly visible canopy-edge environments. This is the single best window for sloth bear sightings in the park.
Best Locations and Techniques
The northern sectors of Wilpattu — particularly around Panikkawila and Manikkapola Udawila — offer the highest probability of sloth bear encounters. The sandy terrain here allows bears to easily excavate termite mounds. Morning drives (6-9 AM) targeting termite mounds in remote scrub forest, combined with tracking fresh digging marks and claw scars on trees, provide the best strategy.
