Inside-Park Stays
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about sleeping inside Wilpattu National Park.
Yes. You are accompanied by an expert naturalist at all times, and the bungalows have dedicated caretakers who live on-site. Guests must remain within the bungalow premises after dark. Wildlife sightings from the bungalow veranda are common but perfectly safe โ animals generally avoid the bungalow area.
The bungalows are authentic government-run facilities built for isolation. They offer clean, basic comfort with proper beds, mosquito nets, and attached bathrooms with running water. The true luxury is the complete privacy, the exclusive location, and waking up inside the wilderness โ not thread counts or room service.
Electricity is provided via solar panels or generators, usually available between 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM. During the day, natural light is abundant. We recommend bringing a portable power bank for charging cameras and phones.
Cell service is extremely limited or non-existent at all six bungalows. There is no Wi-Fi. This is one of the most cherished aspects of the experience โ true disconnection from the digital world. We recommend informing family and work before you enter the park.
You can book directly through our website or contact us on WhatsApp. Inside-park stays require advance booking (at least 3-6 weeks) as DWC bungalow allocation is limited and demand is high. We handle the entire booking process including DWC permits.
Everything is included: all game drives, all meals prepared by your private chef, expert naturalist dedicated to your group, accommodation in the DWC bungalow, park entry fees, and pickup/drop-off at the park entrance. There are no hidden costs.
Personal travel insurance, alcoholic beverages (though you may bring your own), tips for guides and staff, and transportation from Colombo/Negombo/Anuradhapura (available for an additional fee).
Each night includes two full game drives (one afternoon arrival drive and one dawn departure drive). Multi-night packages include additional full-day and half-day drives. The Explorer (2 nights) includes 4 drives, and the Retreat (3 nights) includes 6 drives including a full-day expedition.
Morning drives typically depart at 6:00 AM and return around 10:00 AM. Afternoon drives depart at 3:00 PM and return at sunset (approximately 6:00-6:30 PM depending on season). The exact timing is adjusted daily based on wildlife activity and weather.
Yes, when you book through us, we will confirm bungalow availability based on your dates and preferences. Each bungalow has a unique character, and we'll help you choose the one that best matches your interests.
Light clothing for daytime game drives, a warm layer for evening (temperatures drop significantly after sunset), comfortable walking shoes, a torch/flashlight, insect repellent, toiletries, any personal medications, camera with extra batteries, binoculars, a refillable water bottle, and a book or journal for downtime.
Your private chef prepares all meals using fresh ingredients. Expect Sri Lankan and Western options โ rice and curry, fresh vegetables, fruits, eggs, bread, and local specialties. Dietary requirements (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free) can be accommodated with advance notice.
Yes, guests are welcome to bring their own alcoholic beverages to enjoy responsibly at the bungalow in the evenings. However, consuming alcohol during game drives is strictly prohibited by park regulations.
Our standard policy recommends age 8+ for multi-day stays due to the early morning starts (6AM) and late evening schedules. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent on all game drives. We do not recommend inside-park stays for children under 5.
Each bungalow is assigned exclusively to one party. You never share the bungalow with strangers. This is part of what makes the experience special โ your group has the entire bungalow and the surrounding premises to yourself.
We meet you at the Wilpattu park entrance and handle all transport within the park. For international guests, we can arrange pickup from Colombo, Negombo, or Anuradhapura for an additional fee. The drive from Colombo to Wilpattu is approximately 4 hours.
We offer flexible rescheduling up to 3 weeks before check-in at no charge. Within 3 weeks of check-in, cancellation policies are governed by DWC allocation rules โ please contact us for the specific terms applicable to your booking.
The dry season (May to October) offers the best wildlife viewing as animals concentrate around permanent water sources. The shoulder seasons (February-April and November-December) offer good wildlife with fewer visitors. The wet season (January, heavy rain periods) can make some park roads difficult but offers lush scenery and fewer tourists.
Night drives within the park are generally not permitted by DWC regulations. However, staying inside the park means you experience the night from your bungalow โ the sounds, the darkness, the sense of being surrounded by wildlife. This is a profound experience in itself.
Depending on the bungalow location, guests commonly spot elephants, spotted deer, sambar, wild boar, and numerous bird species from the bungalow premises. Leopard calls at night are common across all bungalows. Some guests have seen sloth bears and leopards from the veranda at dawn and dusk.
Extensions are subject to DWC availability, which is often booked weeks in advance. If you know you want a longer stay, we recommend booking the Retreat (3 nights) or Explorer (2 nights) package from the start rather than planning to extend.
We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and trip cancellation. While Wilpattu is safe, any remote wilderness stay carries inherent risks that insurance helps mitigate.
The bungalows provide filtered or bottled drinking water. We do not recommend drinking tap water. Your naturalist will ensure you have adequate drinking water throughout your stay.
Your naturalist and bungalow caretaker are trained in basic first aid. In case of serious emergency, the park rangers can be contacted via radio, and evacuation to the nearest hospital (approximately 1-2 hours drive) can be arranged.
