How to Get to Wilpattu National Park: Transport and Route Guide

The drive from Colombo to Wilpattu National Park takes approximately 4-5 hours (200 km) via the Colombo-Kurunegala-Anuradhapura highway (A1/A12/A9). The road is well-maintained for the majority of the journey. Private transfers can be arranged through Jungle Junction. Alternatively, take the Colombo-Anuradhapura train (3-4 hours) and arrange a pickup from Anuradhapura station.

Anuradhapura is the primary gateway city to Wilpattu, located approximately 45-60 minutes (35 km) from the park entrance at Hunuwilagama. Most travelers base themselves in Anuradhapura the night before an early morning safari or before entering for a bungalow stay.

If arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport, Negombo is a convenient base. Drive time from Negombo to Wilpattu is approximately 3.5-4 hours. We recommend an overnight stay in Anuradhapura or direct check-in to the bungalow if arriving early.

The main entrance to Wilpattu is at Hunuwilagama village. The Kumbukkan Oya entrance in the north offers access to the park's remote northern sector (Panikkawila, sloth bear territory). Your driver or naturalist will coordinate entry based on the optimal wildlife tracking route for your safari.
