The Complete Sri Lanka Safari Packing List
Clothing Principles
Lightweight, neutral colours (khaki, olive, beige) are essential. Avoid bright colours that startle wildlife and dark blue which attracts ticks. Long trousers protect against insects and sun. A light fleece is invaluable for chilly 6 AM game drives when temperatures can drop to 22ยฐC even in the dry season.
Camera Gear
A DSLR or mirrorless camera with a 200-400mm lens is ideal for wildlife photography. A bean bag (or a bag of rice) provides a stable lens platform on the jeep roll bar. Bring extra memory cards and batteries as charging opportunities during day trips are limited. For bungalow stays, a tripod enables night sky photography.
Sun and Insect Protection
A wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are non-negotiable. The Sri Lankan sun is intense even in the early morning. Insect repellent containing DEET is essential, particularly during dusk and dawn drives. A buff or scarf protects your neck during open-vehicle drives.
Bungalow Essentials
For overnight stays, bring a flashlight or headlamp (power is limited to evening hours in bungalows), a power bank, and any personal medications. Swimwear is recommended for river dips at certain bungalow locations.
