Wilpattu Birding Checklist: Endemics and the Central Asian Flyway

Wilpattu's unique combination of expansive wetlands, dense canopy, and coastal proximity establishes it as an unparalleled theater for ornithological diversity. The park supports an astonishing avian population exceeding 200 distinct species, dynamically shifting between resident endemics and massive seasonal influxes of migratory birds from the Central Asian Flyway.

The deep forest sectors harbor spectacular endemic species. The Sri Lanka Spurfowl is highly secretive, often betrayed only by distinctive calls from dense underbrush. The Sri Lanka Junglefowl, the national bird, is a common sight darting across sandy jeep tracks. Canopy-dwelling endemics include the Sri Lanka Woodshrike, the Sri Lanka Green Pigeon, and the Crimson-fronted Barbet. Nocturnal species include the Brown Fish Owl and the incredibly rare Sri Lanka Bay Owl.

From September through January, Wilpattu becomes a critical sanctuary for migratory species. Greater Flamingos gather in large flocks. Eurasian Spoonbills sweep the mudflats with their spatulate bills. The Indian Pitta arrives with stunning colorful plumage alongside flocks of Blue-tailed Bee-eaters. Resident wetland species include Painted Storks, Black-necked Storks, and Oriental Darters.
