About Lunuwewa Bungalow

Lunuwewa Bungalow offers a different character from Manikwila. The lake here is larger and more open, attracting different wildlife patterns. Elephant herds of 20+ individuals are commonly seen along the shoreline. The vast water surface draws an extraordinary variety of birds — from painted storks to fish eagles to the rare black-necked stork.

The bungalow itself is more intimate than Manikwila, with a single bedroom setup that's perfect for couples or solo travelers seeking deeper isolation. The veranda faces the lake, offering uninterrupted views across the water.

Lunuwewa's quieter location means fewer vehicles pass by. If your priority is bird photography or simply sitting in silence watching elephants drink, this is the bungalow to choose.

Key Features

Lake-Front Position

The veranda overlooks the full expanse of Lunuwewa — one of Wilpattu's most scenic lake systems.

Exceptional Birding

Lunuwewa's open water and muddy edges attract waders, storks, eagles, and migratory birds. A paradise for bird photographers.

Large Elephant Herds

Herds of 15-30 elephants are frequently seen along the shoreline, especially during the dry season.

Intimate & Quiet

With fewer passing vehicles and a more remote location, Lunuwewa offers a quieter, more contemplative experience.

Wildlife at Lunuwewa Bungalow

Lunuwewa's expansive waters make it a birdwatcher's paradise. Painted storks, woolly-necked storks, openbills, cormorants, and multiple egret species are daily sights. Fish eagles and crested serpent eagles hunt from the dead trees along the shoreline. Elephant herds visit daily to drink and bathe — count on seeing them. Leopards are less frequent here than at Manikwila but still present, especially during dry months when prey concentrates around the remaining water. Sloth bears are occasionally spotted in the surrounding forest, and wild boar are common along the lake edge at dawn and dusk.
