About Manikwila Bungalow

Manikwila Bungalow is the most popular of the six DWC bungalows inside Wilpattu National Park. Its location on Manikwila Villu — a large, permanent lake system — means reliable wildlife activity across all seasons. Elephants drink here daily. Leopards patrol the edges. Sloth bears dig for termites in the surrounding forest.

The bungalow itself features two bedrooms with attached bathrooms, a common living area, and a veranda overlooking the villu. Solar panels provide electricity from 6PM to 10PM. A dedicated caretaker lives on-site.

Because of its popularity, Manikwila is often booked weeks in advance. We recommend planning this stay 4-6 weeks ahead, especially during peak season (May-October).

Central Location

Manikwila sits in a central zone, giving you access to multiple park sectors within a short drive.

Wildlife at Manikwila Bungalow

Manikwila Villu is a magnet for wildlife. Expect to see elephants at the water's edge, spotted deer and sambar drinking in the shallows, and crocodiles basking on the banks. Leopards are frequently sighted in the surrounding scrub — the villu attracts their prey, and they follow. Sloth bears are also common in the forest behind the bungalow. Birdlife is exceptional: painted storks, openbills, eagles, and kingfishers are daily visitors. At night, listen for the call of the Indian nightjar and the distant cough of leopards.
