About Mahaweva Bungalow
Mahaweva Bungalow occupies a special location in Wilpattu's eastern corridor, where the forest opens into wide grassy plains surrounding Mahaweva Villu. The open terrain offers excellent visibility — you can spot wildlife from a distance and approach without disturbance. This is a favourite for photographers who prize clear sightlines and golden-hour light across the plains.
The bungalow features two bedrooms with attached bathrooms, accommodating up to 6 guests. The veranda overlooks the grassy approaches to the villu, where elephant herds, deer, and water buffalo are regularly seen grazing at dawn and dusk.
Mahaweva's eastern location means it catches the first light of day — early morning game drives here are spectacular, with the sun rising over the plains and wildlife already active. The open terrain also means leopards are visible at greater distances, offering different photographic opportunities than the dense forest bungalows.
Key Features
Open Plains Views
Unlike the forest bungalows, Mahaweva sits on open terrain with sweeping views across grassy plains — outstanding for wildlife photography.
Exceptional Bird Diversity
The open landscapes attract a different bird community — raptors, grassland species, and large water birds. Over 80 species recorded in the immediate area.
Large Elephant Herds
Herds of 20+ elephants are common visitors to the villu and surrounding plains, especially during the dry season.
Two-Bedroom Layout
Accommodates up to 6 guests across two bedrooms — ideal for families, groups, or photographers traveling with gear.
Wildlife at Mahaweva Bungalow
Mahaweva's open terrain offers a distinct wildlife experience from the rest of Wilpattu. Elephant herds are the stars here — groups of 15-30 animals are commonly seen grazing the plains and drinking at the villu. Spotted deer and sambar thrive in the transition zone between forest and grassland. Leopards are present and visible at greater distances — the open terrain makes for exceptional photographic opportunities. The bird diversity is outstanding: crested hawk-eagles, changeable hawk-eagles, and harriers hunt the grasslands while painted storks, openbills, and egrets work the villu edges. The Sri Lanka junglefowl and peafowl are common in the scrub fringes.
